Into the Hills of Sarrià

To photograph Joan Calvet Mercè, a professional wine taster, I cycled uphill to the last Bicing stop in Sarrià—with a heavy camera bag, of course. That part of town makes it clear where Barcelona’s money lives: houses, private international schools, and leafy cul-de-sacs.

Joan lives in a bungalow tucked away behind a large security gate. Once inside, you’re surrounded by plants, vines, and unfortunately, a small army of tiger mosquitoes. Within minutes I was torn between swatting bugs and framing the shot. They bite fast, and the welts last.

Portraits, Pets, and Pest Control

I wanted his dog in the frame—not just because he’s mentioned in the article, but because he matched the throw on the chair almost too perfectly to ignore.

Despite all the beautiful natural light, I was determined to use the gear I’d lugged uphill. I added fill with a ring flash, which in hindsight was a touch too strong. You can see the telltale halo around the dog, a small detail that bugs me—pun intended.

Still, it’s a portrait full of texture and life. And if the shadows are a little harsh, I’ll blame the mosquitoes for clouding my judgment.
