Independent Coffee Shops: A Photographer’s Perspective

As a corporate photographer based in Barcelona, my first assignment of the New Year took me on a journey through a variety of locations. This particular editorial shoot was commissioned by a magazine with a special interest in capturing the charm and authenticity of independent coffee shops. These unique, owner-run establishments often offer an inviting atmosphere that’s difficult to find in larger, commercial chains. They embody community spirit, individuality, and creativity—a perfect subject for visual storytelling.

### The Challenges of Corporate Establishments vs. Independent Cafés

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned over the years is that when dealing with more corporate or commercial establishments, it’s sometimes better to approach the task as if you’re a tourist. Working quickly and unobtrusively often gets better results than following formal permission channels. Why? Because when you ask for permission to photograph something as simple as a coffee cup, you can find yourself caught in an endless loop of bureaucracy.

A well-meaning employee will likely contact their manager, who will then direct you to call a head office in another city. All of this effort is just to capture something ordinary. This process can be frustrating and time-consuming, especially when the goal is to produce creative, spontaneous images.

Celebrating the Independent Coffee Shop Experience

Thankfully, not all establishments are like this. Independent coffee shops often provide a refreshing contrast to the rigidity of corporate environments. The image featured here was taken at a small, owner-operated café where the proprietor was not only present but actively involved in the creative process. His enthusiasm and hospitality were genuinely inspiring. He even assisted in setting up the still life, while the adorable dog on the chair added a playful, organic touch to the scene.

This experience was a perfect example of how independent coffee shops offer more than just great coffee. They offer stories, character, and a sense of community that is difficult to replicate elsewhere. As a photographer, these are the moments I live for—genuine connections and collaborative creativity.
