Stephanie the Comedienne – Cartwheels and Comedy in the Raval
Stand-Up in the Raval
Stephanie is a Canadian comic who stumbled into stand-up after moving to Barcelona—and never looked back. Now she’s a regular on the local circuit, performing at a small but spirited club in the heart of the Raval. We met up for what turned into a spontaneous shoot, fuelled by nothing more than good humour and a willingness to play.
A Cartwheel and a Perfect Wall
We didn’t have a plan. We just wandered, chatted, and took pictures. The image that ended up in the magazine was shot against a bold orange wall—actually insulation foam cladding the side of a building—but it screamed summer. Luckily, Stephanie had brought a friend who kindly held the reflector to fill in shadows while we experimented. At one point she broke into a series of cartwheels down the street, because… why not?
More Than Just a Laugh
Some shoots feel choreographed; this one felt like hanging out with someone you already knew. Stephanie’s openness and energy made everything easy—she’s a natural in front of the lens, and a joy to work with. I left with images full of light, laughter, and the kind of effortless colour that makes Barcelona such a pleasure to shoot in.
